Spotlight On Our Communities ~ Longview

Located just 64 km south of Calgary on Cowboy Trail, the Village of Longview was once known as Little New York and had a sister town uphill to the north called Little Chicago. Both towns grew up over night in 1937 when oil was discovered and people who had been out of work because of the great depression, flocked to the area.

Buildings sprang up and for the first time in years, men without so much as a coat on their backs earned the first money they had since the depression began. Today, Little Chicago is gone and Little New York is now the Village of Longview.
Longview is known for its view west towards the first range of the Rocky Mountains, its cattle ranching heritage, open spaces and some of the finest Alberta beef. In 1991, Clint Eastwood's Academy Award-winning film Unforgiven was filmed in and around Longview, which is also the home of Canadian Country Music star Ian Tyson, who maintains a ranch in the area and regularly performs at the local community hall.
