C Ian McLaren ~ Changes in Classrooms

Last spring, at C. Ian McLaren, we were experiencing high numbers in the lower grades and low numbers in the higher grade. To compensate, we created multi-age classes so that we could have lower numbers in the younger grades. We researched multi-age classrooms and our research showed that students who participate in multi-age classrooms have equal or better achievement than straight grades. As well positive social emotional gains have also been noted in multi-age classes. However, low class sizes in the multi-age configuration did not work out the way we had planned as we had 16 new students begin at our school this fall that we did not know about in June. Consequently, we ended up with large classes in almost every homeroom.
As many of you may have heard, Allison Redford promised to return education funding to the schools after she became the new premier. This has directly impacted C. Ian McLaren School as we have gained another teacher. As of January 9th, 2012, we will have another homeroom classroom. Although, this will cause readjustments for students and teachers, we will end up with less multi-age classrooms and smaller class sizes. We are excited that the students will have fewer students in their classes which should result in more concentrated instruction and individual time for each student. If you have any questions or comments please contact the administration team of Mrs. Jones or Mrs. Forchuk.
