Summer 2011

Dear Residents,
Hope you are enjoying your summer! A few things to keep you posted on the activities in your area of the MD of Foothills:

As a result of the many troubles with drainage and flooding this spring, your MD will be repairing roads throughout the summer. The Coal Mine Road bridge is scheduled for replacement, starting the end of July, with a plan to open in late August. Also, your Public Works Department is helping residents by providing advice on drainage problems.

The Province has set up a Disaster Recovery Program for residents of the MD of Foothills, Town of High River and Okotoks who have experienced damages that are not insured. For more information, please call: 1-888-671-1111.

Alberta Transportation (through Volker Stevin) will be making some repairs of the surface on Highway 22 this summer. Highway 762, which has had some ongoing concerns, is also being addressed by Alberta Transportation.

Your MD of Foothills is helping to arrange some target shifts for enforcement to encourage safe driving and motorcycle safety on the west roads of Highways 22, 762 and 549 this summer. This will include the teamwork of our MD Peace Officers, Provincial Sheriffs and the RCMP of our area. I will continue to support these measures to bring awareness to safety and noise issues in our area.

Your Foothills Regional Emergency Commission (FRESC) & MD have been influential in getting an oversight committee set up, which will impact and address our concerns since the consolidation of our EMS services to Alberta Health Services (AHS). Currently your 9-1-1 calls go to our dispatch in Black Diamond, which are then transferred to Calgary Public Safety Communication Service (PSC), if an ambulance is required. The purpose of this committee is to facilitate the continued team approach to resolve identified service delivery issues. The oversight committee is comprised of representatives from AHS, FRESC, PSC, MD of Foothills and Alberta Health & Wellness. I will continue to be involved in monitoring this process.

Important Reminder: Know and post your MD 9-1-1 Address. Please call the MD if you need information on your address or how to post it: 403-652-2341. This address helps emergency responders to find you. It is also helpful to keep this address near your phone, should you need it in an emergency.

Our Growth Management Strategy will be launched in the Fall. We look forward to your participation in planning our Municipal District. More information will be sent to you on this.

Your MD Council and staff continue to represent you in discussions regarding the Calgary Regional Partnership and its Calgary Metropolitan Plan, by presenting the key issues of concern for the MD of Foothills. A go forward position has not yet been identified.

FYI – there will be prescribed fires in the Kananaskis area this summer, after August 1st. In case these controlled fires affect your travels or you may notice the smoke, depending on the weather conditions, please check online for more details: www.kananaskis-country.ca

Fire Hazard: For current Fire Ban information, visit: www.albertafirebans.ca and for information on provincial parks, visit: www.albertaparks.ca.

Please Share the Road! Just a friendly message to remind you that the MD roads and highways are full of different users in the summer months - cyclers, people walking, horses & riders, folks enjoying scenic driving tours, travelers, recreation vehicles, wild animals, stray dogs, folks taking photos from the side of the road, road repair workers doing service on MD roads and highways, other construction, motorcycles and of course the regular commuter and transport vehicles, etc. Please be mindful of all the activities that can make your regular routes a bit of a safety hazard or obstacle course and may require more patience than usual. Please Share the Road!

I enjoyed seeing many of you at the Priddis Stampede Breakfast. I hope to see you at the Millarville Rodeo August 5th, 6th and 7th and the Priddis & Millarville Fair on August 20th.
