Anyone who has hiked paths in our beautiful Rocky Mountains knows that you can encounter everything from nice and fairly easy paths to straight uphill and rocky ones where you can slip and fall and get badly injured.
It's important when you are doing any serious hiking to do some planning – a map to know where you're going, a backpack with necessities, the right clothes and good sturdy shoes to get you where you want to go. Following the paths and staying on the ones that you know are the right ones, are the keys to getting to your destination safely and having the best time while you are hiking.
Going through life is a lot like that. God's word gives us some great advice about our journey through life:
“Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. Mark out a straight path for your feet; then stick to the path and stay safe. Don't get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil.” (Proverbs 4: 25-27 NLT)
The best way to know how to 'look straight ahead' and 'marking out a straight path for your feet' is to know personally the One who created you. He is the most interested in your life and welfare, as well as the best Guide for your life. He is then able to watch over and direct you as you learn to live your life with your hand in His.
Another great piece of advice that comes from that same part of God's word is:
“Above all else, guard your heart, for it affects everything you do.” (Proverbs 4:23 NLT)
'Guarding your heart' is also part of sticking to that straight path and staying safe. If we let our heart get swayed into doing things that are bad choices and lead us away from God, then it does 'affect everything we do.' God will help us back on that straight path if we fall off; but the more we learn to stick to that right path, the healthier our life will go.
