We encourage all of our students to always do their best in everything that they do. At our celebration assembly we honour and recognize all of our students for their accomplishments throughout the year. On June 29th the students, staff, parents and community celebrated the end of another amazing school year with an awards ceremony, BBQ and water games activities.
All of our students were awarded Let Your Learning Soar Certificates. Each student was recognized in front of the entire school for doing their best. Our assembly was opened with the singing of O'Canada and words of congratulations from the Deputy Superintendent of Foothills School Division, Del Litke. The Mayor of the Village of Longview, Ivor McCorquindale also shared with the audience how proud he was of all the students and awarded Dawson Nelson the Village of Longview Eagle Award.
Longview Students are very proud of their school. They take pride in being an eagle and proudly wear the school colours of blue and gold. The Student Athletic Award was awarded to Grace Bowles and Graysen Lyons (Kindergarten), Hailey Nelson and Ernie Fehr (Grade 1/2), Chiara Simon and Coby Stuart (Grade 3/4), Chloe Dixon and Brodie Meston (Grade 5/6) for their athletic accomplishments.
Our Grade 5 guitar students played an assortment of songs they learned in music with Ms. Graham and Ms. Roberts. Grade 5 students will continue to learn guitar as part of the music program at Longview School this year. The school will continue to have different local musical guests come and play for and with our students.
Our music program encourages creative expression through performance, listening and composition. Performance is an active process involving the development and application of musical skills, knowledge and perceptions. Students develop as listeners, evaluators, consumers and historians of music. In the music program students develop an enjoyment of music, an awareness and appreciation of a variety of music, self-expression and creativity, musical skills and knowledge. Students learn the concepts of rhythm, melody, harmony, form and expression. They develop the skills of singing, playing instruments, listening, moving, reading/writing and creating. An overall enjoyment and positive attitude towards music is developed. The music awards were awarded to Nevada Mitchell-McElhone (Kindergarten), Claire McPherson (Grade 1/2), Flynn Roberts (Grade 3/4), Hope Roberts (Grade 5) and Dayna Mikkelsen (Grade 6 band) for their musical accomplishments.
The overall goal of our drama presentations at Longview School is to foster a positive self-concept in students by encouraging students to explore life by assuming theatric roles and acquiring dramatic skills. Throughout the year we presented a number of dramatic performances in meeting the learner outcomes outlined in the drama program of studies. The drama awards were awarded to Grace Bowles (Kindergarten), Morgan Robertson (Grade 1/2), Felicia McIntosh (Grade 3/4), Josie Hughes (Grade 5/6) for their dramatic accomplishments.
The arts program provides opportunity for a variety of experiences including a chance to grow and develop as an individual; to develop perceptual awareness; to learn visual arts skills and concepts; to interpret and communicate; to create; to appreciate the cultural aspects of art; and to relate and appreciate art in everyday life. The art awards were awarded to Elvin Moon (Kindergarten), Lillianna McIntosh (Grade 1/2), Jaxon Doram (Grade 3/4) and Ashley Nelson (Grade 5/6) for their artistic accomplishments.
Mrs. Dyck recognized all the volunteer hours and hard work of the library helpers at the assembly. Mrs. Dyck will continue to offer a library helpers program, organize our literacy week activities and support our soaring literacy program. She makes our library a special and exciting learning centre for all the students and staff.
We are so grateful to our School Council including Joan Stuart (Chair), Karen Nelson (Treasurer) and Krista Miller (Secretary) in supporting our celebration assembly and in everything they do throughout the year. Our motto, Once an Eagle always an Eagle, is about the qualities, characteristics and behaviors we expect from and foster in our students as citizens of our school. It is about what touches the heart and makes our students better athletes, better students and better people. School Council awarded citizenship awards to Nevada Mitchell-McElhone (Kindergarten), Erin Hughes (Grade 1/2), Brielle Goss (Grade 3/4), Jade Nelson (Grade 5/6) and the volunteer award to Shannon Nelson.
Our assembly concluded with plaques awarded to our grade six students including Kourtney Berard, Brendon Coyle, Sheldon Coyle, Tuff Dixon, Liam Jantzen, Brodie Meston and Dayna Mikkelson. Each grade six student made a speech about their favourite memories of being a student at Longview School. These words of wisdom touched the hearts of all in attendance and we wish them all the best in grade seven. We fondly reflected back on the past year with a slideshow of amazing photos taken throughout the year by Ms. Winfield. Thank You to everyone for another GREAT year at Longview School!
