Longview Library Literally Speaking

(Page 16)

Our featured authors this month are Canadian. Joan has selected some of the very best for this display, so come in and have a gander. And our featured artist is Irene Stewart. Irene lives in the town of Longview and paints scenes in and around our area, so do drop in to see them. You are in for a treat. Our programs in October were really great. At an evening on snowshoeing, we learned about the equipment needed, the trails available in the Kananaskis and locally, techniques demonstrated and safety tips given. It was a lively, fun evening.
I made a mistake in my last newsletter about our hours of operation on Wednesdays. We open at 12:00 and close at 7:00 in the evening.
Many of you may be confused, as was I, about who The Dames on the Range are? They are a group of women of various kinds of expertise, living in southwestern Alberta. They are eager to share their knowledge by way of lectures and seminars. They have very kindly shared evenings with us at the library and all have been most successful. Our programs all happen on Wednesday nights at 7pm or on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the day. Check the postoffice's bulletin board just inside the door for upcoming events, or call the library at 403-558-3927.
Books you might enjoy this month are: THE AGE OF LONGING by Richard B. Wright from Joan's Canadian display. It is set in a small Ontario town on Georgian Bay, spans three generations, and is the hero's search for self understanding. It is written with poise and grace and is a sheer pleasure to read. It also portrays Canadian life in the 30s and early 40s. Also, NIKOLSKI by Nicolas Dickner. It is an imaginative, clever, and fanciful portrayal of three memorable characters living in Montreal. Nikoloski's comic brilliance makes it a wonderfully enjoyable read You must suspend your belief every once in a while to truly enjoy the book, Dickner writes with humour and charm and is a born storyteller. And to finish off... Trish Cohen's THE TRUTH ABOUT DELILHA BLUE is an engrossing story of a small child who is kidnapped by her own father and ferreted off to L.A. from Toronto. She grows up to be an ardent art student and he develops early onset Alzheimer's. Cohen writes with wit, flare and a great insight into human and animal nature.
The following programs are being offered in the month of November in our library. Do plan to attend!
1. Video Conference: We Remember Them - a Tour of Canadian War Memorial Sites. Tuesday, November 9th at 2pm.

Sylvia Binkley
