Moving Preparations Underway Sheep River Library

(Page 21)

Final building stages are underway, fundraising initiatives are in full swing, preparations for the big move are being made and plans for the first few months of operations have been put in place. And with all this additional pressure, the staff are continuing to provide excellent service to the patrons taking out books, ordering books and attending classes as if nothing unusual was happening. Thank you staff and volunteers for your dedication and professionalism.
On the exterior of the building, the brick-work is being put into place, giving the building a more finished appearance. Inside, the wiring is almost compete with Supernet connections to all the videoconferencing equipment and computer stations. Shelving, cupboards, study stations, computer work areas and the main circulation desk are under construction with a December deadline in place.
Many of the second hand books that were for sale have been boxed, giving shelving space for the new books that are arriving daily. While the shelves at the back of the library near the washrooms are a bit out of the way, they are the only available space for the new books. It will be such a pleasure to be less crowded and have more space with adequate lighting! Please drop in to search out the new titles!
A new Facebook page and a new web page are under construction. These two forms of getting information out to the communities will help you find current news and updates daily. New book titles will be posted as they arrive.
Mark Saturday, December 4th on your calendar. The Friends of the Sheep River Library Foundation are presenting the annual ceilidh concert by Cowboy Celtic at the Flare and Derrick. This Cowboy Ceilidh is an annual tradition by this internationally renowned band. Our own David Wilkie (vocals, mandolin) and Denise Withnell (vocals, guitar) will be joined by band members on harp, flutes and whistles, fiddle and bodhran. The night also includes door prizes and a full cash bar featuring several single-malt whiskies. Tickets are $22, available at The Stop in Black Diamond, Millarville General Store, and Harvest Moon in Okotoks. Volunteers are needed to help the Friends run the Cowboy Celtic event. From set-up, to ticket taking, to bar tending, to clean up - help is needed! Please call 933-5811 if you can help out.
Volunteers for special events are one of the many kinds of volunteers that keep the Sheep River Library operational. Floor volunteers keep the books in order on the shelves, and pull books that have been ordered by people in other communities. Phone volunteers are needed to call patrons when books arrive and to announce events. Sign volunteers put up posters and change the wording on the town announcement boards. Others teach classes, lead story hour for children and help arrange special events.
BIGGEST EVER VOLUNTEER DRIVE is underway. Sheep River Library is going to need MORE volunteers when we are in our brilliant new library space and we would like to have you trained and ready to go before the big event. Please join us on Tuesday the 16th of November at the library from 2 ‑ 4pm or 7 ‑ 9pm. Learn of the many diverse volunteer positions. We will give you all the training you need. A Marigold Rep will be on hand on the 16th, there will be coffee, tea and goodies and you'll get a chance to meet all the other new and long time volunteers. Please plan on attending - new or seasoned volunteer and please pass the invitation on to any friends who might be interested. RSVP Muhammad by phone, 403-933-3278.
The Friends of the Library have just heard of three more significant donations that are coming to the library. Please watch your local papers for detailed announcements when the cheques arrive.
All these dollars, as well as the money raised from the Tiles, will be matched, giving the library the necessary funds for furnishings. Chairs for the meeting rooms have been ordered along with wooden chairs for the computer stations and study carrels. Desks for staff and special chairs for the children’s area are now ready for the move. With the helpful advice from seniors at the Lodge, comfortable, easy chairs have been ordered according to very specific directions. Thank you!
Program plans for winter/spring are being finalized and will include many new activities and special events. Included in this line up of exciting happenings will be a Small Business Trade Fair, a special KITE month, McBride Training Sessions, seniors tea and entertainment once a month, Saturday movie matinees for kids and, of course, a Grand Opening Celebration.
