The George Traditional House in Okotoks is a great place to catch the UFC fight, hockey game, or shoot a game of pool. They're not shy about mixing a round of Monoxides (1 part Jameson Irish Whiskey with 2 parts Red Bull) and the food is impressive.

We really rolled the dice by ordering a steamed mussels special; seafood on the prairies, in a pub, on special. I was half expecting a red tide special, but they were flavoured with wine, butter, garlic and tasted great. The chef who handpicked these saucy, fresh mollusks definitely knew what to keep and what to throw away. Well Done!

The menu encompasses Irish and local pub fare in addition to a well-rounded array of beer, wine and spirits. Furnished pub-style with dark wood and brass, The George offers plenty of seating in a clean, casual atmosphere, wheelchair access and a nice, sunny patio.

Their Happy Hour runs  4 to 7pm, Monday to Friday and Saturday night features specials on entrees and house brand hi-balls. I've patronized Donegal, The Joyce, Limericks and the rest of “Calgary's Best Pubs” and they all share a common theme: plenty of hotties in plaid skirts roaring around and none of them carrying drinks. The owners spend millions on décor – and it shows - but don't ensure a capable serving staff. It's difficult to care that you're in the nicest pub in town when the service is slower than an underwater tai chi class. Frequent, friendly service is where The George truly stands apart.

It's definitely worth bringing the crew to The George for a meal and a Monoxide any day of the week. Plus, the pub is host to occasional events which can be found on their website at www.thegeorgetraditionalhouse.com.
