While many activities are on summer hiatus and other than for emergent reasons, General and Executive Meetings are not held in July or August, the work of the Legion goes on. Recent events that were well supported by members and the general public have included the Canada Day BBQ and the Stampede Pancake Breakfast.

The one activity that continues is golf at the Turner Valley Golf Club. Call Howie (933 4380) if you are interested in joining this group at 5pm on a Thursday evening. Golf is followed by food and a social time and it is not unusual to see 30 or 40 folks out.

Elsewhere you will see the information on the large donation made to the Sheep River Health Trust. It is the latest and largest of a long series of donations that have aided in the provision of enhanced health services to Veterans and Seniors in the region. These donations, along with various scholarship and bursary awards to students and the support of many other youth activities are a constant source of community endeavour by your local Legion.

On the topic of Seniors, the regular Seniors' Dinner will be held on Monday, July 25th. The theme is “Christmas in July” and will feature a full roast turkey dinner for $13.00. Order your tickets early as this event sells out quickly.

Tickets are also available for what was a sell-out event last year. This is our Second Annual Hog Roast featuring music by Gypsy and the Rose. Don't be disappointed; get your tickets early for $20.00 each.

The Branch continues with its new initiative to heighten awareness of the need to remember the sacrifice of those who have died in past and current conflicts. July is a poignant month with dates that reflect Canadian commitments and losses in WWI, WWII, Korea and of course, Afghanistan. On one Sunday each month at noon, we gather at the Cenotaph by the Legion to hold our short Service of Remembrance. The next one will be the second Sunday in August. You are invited to attend whether in or out of uniform.

Each year at the end of July members of our Branch are represented at the Annual Lewis and Clarke parade in our sister city, Cutbank, Montana. We are hoping that they will have been similarly represented at the Longview “Little New York Days” Parade on July 16th where our Legion Colour Party was once again asked to lead.

Don't forget the regular Kitchen offerings, which include a very good buffet on Wednesday and Friday evenings as well as menu choices on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday evenings. Also on Saturday mornings we feature a varied breakfast menu from 09:00 to 12:00.

Yours in Service to Veterans and the Community
~ Comrade Malcolm Hughes
