Rowan House and the Foothills community have been working very hard over the last three years to raise money to build a new shelter for women in need, and their efforts paid off with a June 21st ground breaking ceremony marking the start of construction.

The High River site buzzed with Rowan House officials and staff, community dignitaries, Government representatives and members of the public who came out to celebrate the project's commencement. Board Chair Lorna Shaw, High River Mayor Emile Blokland and Highwood MLA George Groeneveld grabbed shovels and dug in.

The goal of Rowan House Emergency Shelter is to provide women and their children a safe environment, beneficial programming and temporary housing while facilitating transition back into the community. The new building will accommodate more women in need than the original shelter near Black Diamond, and is scheduled for completion by the summer of 2012.
