Town of Turner Valley Pool staff are extending a helping hand to the residents of Slave Lake to rebuild their community after the devastating wild fires destroyed nearly half of the town.

Pool Operations Manager Cheryl Gross and her staff will host a swim-a-thon on July 29th and 30th to raise funds to help purchase needed equipment, supplies or repairs to public facilities in Slave Lake.

All proceeds from the event will be given to the Canadian Red Cross for use toward rebuilding efforts.
Swim-a-thon participants are asked to collect a minimum pledge of $50 and can book swim times between 30 minutes and a maximum of 4.5 hours. Registration forms and additional participant information is available at www.turnervalley.ca/community/swimmingpool.

“Pool staff wanted to help in a meaningful way by both donating their time toward this event as well as encouraging the community to participate”, stated Ms. Gross. She added “Pool staff wanted to show support to the residents and staff of the Town of Slave Lake through this effort and by also challenging other community pools throughout Alberta to host an event for the same purpose.”

Mayor Kelly Tuck and Council approved the swim-a-thon proposal at the June Council meeting and are fully behind the initiative. “Council applauds the caring and effort put into this by our valued staff. It is a great way to support Slave Lake as a municipal government and involve the community at large.”

By hosting an event and involving the community, funds collected and subsequently donated are truly community-based and are not derived from municipal taxes.

Pool staff members have offered to volunteer their time to organize and compete in the swim-a-thon. The pool will remain open for regularly scheduled classes and public swimming during the swim-a-thon, as only a few lanes will be used.
