Longview School - Let Learning Soar

It was wonderful to see all the parents at our Autumn Open House at Longview School on Tuesday, September 20th. Parents got the opportunity to meet the teachers and learn more about class and school programs and activities, Longview School Handbook, Volunteer Handbook, Alberta Education Parent Handbook, Curriculum at a Glance, Learner Profile and Student Achieve, Learning Logs and Literacy Logs and the Overview of Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting of Student Learning.
It is with great pleasure to announce that Joan Stuart will remain as School Council Chair, Krista Miller will continue in the role of Secretary and Karen Nelson as Treasurer. The executive and classroom reps were decided at our very well attended AGM on September 20th. Michelle Nelson is grade 6 class rep and Shelley Scott is grade 5 class rep, Lance Doram is grade 3 rep and Cara Marshall is grade 4 rep, Mr. and Mrs. Moon are the grade 1/2 class rep and Donna Gallup is the kindergarten rep. Krista Miller also agreed to represent Longview School Council at the Council of School Councils at their area meetings throughout the year. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend School Council meetings which are held the third Tuesday of each month from 6:00 to 7:30pm. Such a small amount of time can make such a big difference. Please consider attending.
A big Thank You is extended to all the individuals who volunteered their time at the Casino. It is a very important fund raiser for the Longview School Council and your help was greatly appreciated. Shannon and Penny Nelson have graciously agreed to cook hot dogs again this year. Hot dog day and treat stand have changed to Thursdays this year. As well, we are having picnic Tuesdays and Thursdays this year. Students gather in the gym and eat lunch together on picnic table cloths. The students appear to really enjoy this multi-aged social gathering.
Many exciting art, music, drama and sports activities and experiences have been planned for our students and a calendar of events for the entire school year has been forwarded to parents. Students, staff, parents and community members climbed Longview Hill on Thursday, September 22nd in support of the Terry Fox Foundation. At the assembly, students learned about Terry Fox, his accomplishments and his illness. The whole school collected coins that were ceremoniously spilled onto a piece of paper stretching from East to West across the width of the gym representing the Trans Canada highway, the Highway of Hope. It was a beautiful day and the view from the top was spectacular. It was definitely worth the long, hard climb. It gave us the opportunity to take a number of amazing photos of the students with the mountains as the back drop and reflect on Terry's journey. It was a very special day for everyone and a great tradition at Longview School.
