How Well Do You Know your Gateway Gazette?

Do you know how we get the articles you enjoy reading?

In the last edition of the Grassroots, I touched on points about who we are, what we do and where we distribute the Gateway Gazette Grassroots.
I also introduced the concept of our online edition the Gateway Gazette Grandé and where we are heading with that publication.
In this article I would like to explain a little about the content side of both publications.

Points about our content:
  • rely on resident participation for article submissions of local events
  • encourage feedback and suggestions for improvement
  • provide advertising sponsorship for a limited number of non-profit events
  • support community groups on limited budgets with article coverage
  • “press release” or “PSA” submissions only accepted from previously approved official sources
  • consistently include articles from our regular columnists
Our regular columnists faithfully bring you a variety of articles that are informative, inspiring, useful and humourous, all out of the goodness of their hearts because they enjoy sharing what they are passionate about and because they love your paper.

We also include various forms of coverage when a business has supported a local community group.
We encourage advertisers to provide short article pieces that are general and educational in nature that are relevant to their industry – these are run at no charge (space permitted) and include a commercial by-line for the providing business.
In order to provide as much variety in our editorial content as possible we endeavour to keep the article pieces we include to as few words as possible. While this may not always be possible, providing articles of 300 words or less does give each article a much better opportunity to be included in our print edition.

As our online edition continues to grow, and because we are not as restricted in our page counts for the online edition, there will continue to be a transition towards more articles, that exceed the 300 word count, only being included in our online edition, in particular with articles exceeding 500 words. In line with this transition we have also taken steps to have our print edition known as the “Gateway Gazette Grassroots” and our expanded, online edition as the “Gateway Gazette Grandé”.
A few benefits of the Grandé online edition is that we are able to spread things out more, allowing for larger font sizes and less ads per page, plus we are able to increase the online edition page count one page at a time as necessary.
The content can be more varied in the online edition and more topics can be included.
Another bonus at the moment is that anyone advertising in our print edition is getting the added exposure of automatically having their ad included in our online edition at no additional cost. Something for advertisers to look forward to in the future will be the opportunity to purchase online advertising just in our Grandé online edition.
Next edition I will close my mini-series with an article about advertising on a limited budget or how to get the most bang for your buck!
