Sheep River Library News - Become a Reader For Life

Check out the magazines for children of all ages at the library....

My daughter, who is in Grade 6, came home the other day very excited because she, along with some others in her class, had been asked to go and read to the Grade 1 class. She perused our book shelves, selected a book and then proceeded to practice reading the story with all the vocal and facial expressions she would use, figuring out when she would hold the book up to show them the illustrations and how fast and slow she would read it. “This will be so much fun. I loved being read to,” she exclaimed. Of course in our house being read to was a daily activity and is probably where all my children began to develop a deep love of reading. At any time I can ask any of my children what they are reading and regardless of how busy their lives are they can always give me an answer. Currently we have Watership Down, Mocking Jay, and The Help on the go. At the Sheep River Library we want to promote and model reading to our littlest patrons which is why we offer StoryTime twice a week on Thursdays at 2:00 pm and Fridays at 10:30 am. Pam, our wonderful and very enthusiastic storyteller, reads aloud a variety of stories sometimes with accompanying actions and puppets. This group meets over in our Children's Area amongst the beanbag chairs and cushions. So bring along your children or grandchildren and participate in this activity that will birth a love of reading for a lifetime. Also, for children we have our Literacy for Life programs that run on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Call the library 403-933-3278 for the time of the class that would best suit your child. In addition to our programs, we also have some new magazines especially for our younger readers: Chirp -a periodical for 3-6 year olds comprised of stories, crafts, comics, jokes and puzzles; Chickadee (6-9 years), and Owl (9-13 years). We also have National Geographic for Kids and National Geographic for Little Kids, so keep these in mind when kids have science or social projects at school. They are full of good information. Rounding out our selection for children is Creative Kids. This magazine's content of stories, puzzles and crafts is all provided by teenager contributors.
Coming up in the first part of February we have Law at Lunch. This teleconference on February 1st is looking at residential tenancies. Also on February 1st we have our TracPac and Overdrive class at 7:00 pm. This class will teach you how to use the library catalogue to find and order books at home as well as how to download library e-books onto your e-reader. On Thursday (February 2nd) we have DocProbe. This month's documentaries are to do with food. We will be screening 2 short films: Fresh and Grow. Friday February 10th is another session of Book to Film. This month we will be viewing A Room with a View. Don't worry if you haven't read the book. We won't turn you away!
Please remember to register for any classes you are interested in. This ensures your place in the class and that the class won't be cancelled.
