Longview Library Literally Speaking - Sight Seeing Made Easy

They've seen the palaces of Korea and are about to be whisked off to Indonesia and South Africa....want to come along?

On the 18th of January, we had a wonderful presentation from Alison from Marigold on how to download ebooks from the library onto our personal e-readers. If you missed it or if you are interested in having another session, please let Joan know, and she will try to organize it.
On Thursday February 9th, Jun Young Lee gave a talk on the two most important palaces in Korea. On Wednesday, February 29th. at 7pm, Doris Lesick will give a talk on her impressions of Indonesia , including her visit to the orphans of Batham, the Sumatran elephants and the orangutans of Borneo. Please register by phone (403-558-3927) or sign up at the Village Office on the bulletin board.
On March 14th, Jan Dyck will give a talk about her and her husband's trip to South Africa. That will be at 7pm.
During Literacy Week, Jan Dyck brought the Grade Five and Grade Six children from the Longview Elementary School for an orientation of our library and a lesson on how to research subjects for their assignments. Classes from Kindergarten to Grade Four came for a special story hour.
Our Pancake Supper was on Tuesday, February 14th (Valentines Day) at the Community Hall. This is always lots of fun and a good chance to see all our friends.
For those of you who remember the novel Obasan by Joy Kogawa about the internment of the Japanese Canadians in British Columbia during the Second World War, there is an equally stirring novel The Hotel At The Corner Of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford. It is about the internment of the American Japanese at the same time in history. The story is based in Seattle, Washington and tells of the different customs and mores of the Asian culture, its deep loyalty to tradition and the great respect and reverence that it has for its elders. Interwoven in the grim portrayal of conditions in these camps is a beautiful love story. The title is apt - "bitter and sweet" and the book a delightful read.
Sometimes I mention a book that isn't in our library. You mustn't let that deter you, because with our inter-library loan system, you can get any book you want by simply speaking to Joan. She will order it for you and you should have your book within the week. Many of our books are constantly going out to other libraries. It's a good system and works very well for all concerned.
Happy Reading
Sylvia Binkley
