Local artist Robin Thibodeau was faced with some tough decisions on this year’s annual Christmas Colouring Contest. It’s clear that we have some very serious and dedicated colourers / artists in our readership - of all ages. Our youngest submission was by Willow Cummings, aged 2 of DeWinton and our most seasoned submission came from the ever young at heart Marlene, aged 68 of Okotoks. We were also impressed with the geographical spread in this years’ submissions - while plenty came from our surrounding locals, the third place winner of our 14 and over category came from one of our online readers all the way from Florida, USA.
But back to the judging, in making her selection Robin considered a great many details - use of colour, consistency of pattern, addition of detail not originally present, unique concepts . . . it was quite an extensive list she was rattling off while pondering her choices.
In the end she managed to reach a decision, choosing a total of 9 winners (3 per category) who will all be receiving various cash prizes. Robin’s 1st place selections were scanned and included here and the primary reasons for her selections are listed below:
1st Place:
8 + under: Sarah Anderson, 8, Okotoks ~ for the use of a gradient background.
9 to 13: Makayla Nadeau, 11, Black Diamond ~ for the definition and use of unique patterning on the circular candy.
14+: Marlene Wilkie, 68, Okotoks ~ for the added details beyond the picture provided and the use of the ever challenging silver pens.
2nd Place:
8 & under: Kyler Harper, 8, Turner Valley ~ for effective use of consistent patterning.
9-13: Annah Baldwin, 13, High River ~ for the unique approach of giving her Gingerbread man a tuxedo outfit.
14+: Heather Baldwin, 51, High River ~ for the use of a contrasting background and added details.
3rd Place:
8 & under: Cheyene Bowker, 7, Black Diamond ~ for the effective use of two tone shading and consistent patterning.
9-13: Rachel Anderson, 10, Okotoks ~ for the meticulous neatness and consistency of a more complex pattern.
14+: Cynthia Simmons, 50, Winter Park (Florida) ~ for the extreme and diverse use of added details above and beyond.

Thank you to everyone who participated and we look forward to your participation again next year. We’re thinking that maybe we should all see if we can make those choices an even bigger challenge for Robin!

Congratulations
to this years’
winners,
job well done!
