Sheep River Library News ~ Making your list and checking it twice….

I received the following Christmas wish list from my 11 year old daughter:
1.Kitten (real and living), 2.Gift Card for Forever 21 (girls), 3.Gift Card for Claire's, 4.Poster of Selena Gomez, 5.Walls of my bedroom painted, 6.My Closet to be done, 7.Pooke Tooke, 8.Galaxy Ball, 9.Necklace from Calgary Art Market, 10.Pig (real and living), 11.Caramel Corn, 12.Binder that you can colour on, 13.Alarm clock, 14.Mini whiteboard, 15.Triple Flip gift card, 16.Tenor saxophone, 17.Cell phone.
If I can only get one thing, it would be the cell phone. I am the only kid in my class that doesn't have one!
My answer to the list was as follows:
1.No, 2.Maybe, 3.Probably, 4.Why? 5 & 6. Talk to your Father, 7.What? 8. Again, what? 9. Market's over, 10.Over my dead body, 11.YES! 12. Yes, 13.You sleep next to my room, so no, 14.Yes, 15.Maybe, 16.Once again, your room is next to mine, so… 17.Embrace individuality! You can get a phone when you can pay for the plan.
Most of us make lists of what we would like for Christmas and also lists of our resolutions for the New Year. We at the Library have a list as well: all the new courses we will be offering in the Winter/Spring Session. We have lots of new classes and some old favourites are back by popular demand.
We have expanded our book and film clubs and now offer in addition to the Library Book Club, ChickLit (women writing about and for women); The GGs(Nominees for the Governor General's Award) and the Bucket List (100 books you should read before you die). Dogtooth Mountain Film Group returns with another great selection of off-main stream films. In addition we have DocProbe (documentaries); Book to Film (books and their film adaptations) and Classic Movie Matinees (movies of the 40s, 50s and 60s).
Evonne Smulders will be teaching 7 courses on permaculture, so if gardening is your passion, sign up for her classes and learn how to get the most out of your garden in a way that benefits both you and the environment. We have several General Interest courses, including Yoga for both beginners and experienced participants. You can learn how to use recycled materials to make an art journal (Re-purposing Art Journals); Bev Geier returns to show you how to make a spring centerpiece for your table; Pam and Jane are offering a class on foods that come from starters (vinegar, yogurt and sourdough); Doug Robertson will be giving a talk on the restoration of his Tiger Moth Aeroplane and our very own Library Manager will teach you how to solve Cryptic Crossword Puzzles. Search and Rescue are also teaching 2 courses: Adventure Smart and Map and Compass reading.
We have added to our computer classes with Social Media 101: Facebook, Twitter and GooglePlus. If this stuff is still a mystery to you then sign up and become proficient in online networking. McBride Career Group returns with their slate of classes to help you with career planning, including a new course: Word Processing for Resumes.
For dates and times of all classes (The above is just a sampling) please pick up a brochure at the library or check out our website at:
www.sheepriverlibrary.ca. This information will also be in the Foothills Continuing Education booklet which is out December 28th. All courses are also advertised on our Library PowerPoint TV.
Sign up begins December 12th. Register early, so you don't miss out! See you in the New Year.
